Update at 4:35 p.m.: Calaveras County Sheriff’s officials have released an update on an incident in the 300 block of Pope Street in San Andreas where deputies were trying to “de-escalate a situation with a suspect.”
Sheriff’s spokesperson Lt. Greg Stark detailed that the incident started around 7:15 a.m. when deputies were alerted to a male subject who was reportedly walking on the roadway while possibly carrying a shotgun or rifle. The first deputy on the scene approached the suspect, who “immediately ran into his home” as the deputy was not “close enough to stop the subject and believed the subject to be carrying a weapon,” according to Lt. Stark.
The deputy repeatedly asked that the suspect come out of the residence, which he refused to do. Backup was called for with additional resources from the sheriff’s office, including a Calaveras County Crisis Negotiator, Behavioral Health, and CHP, in an attempt to peacefully resolve the situation. Lt. Stark disclosed, “Despite significant effort, the person refused to comply or meaningfully engage with the negotiator.” He added, “Due to the lack of witnesses and verifiable information regarding the subject possessing a weapon, the bulk of the deputies assigned to the incident were released. A few deputies remained in the area to ensure the subject did not immediately leave his residence.”
Sheriff’s officials are asking that anyone who directly observed the man possessing a weapon or taking items contact investigators at 209-754-6500.
