Mi Wuk Village, CA — In what is described as a cost-cutting move, the Stanislaus National Forest will close the front desk, indefinitely, at its Mi-Wok Ranger District Office.
The front office of the building has been open on Fridays and was a spot for visitors to stop by and receive information and permits. Forest Supervisor Jason Kuiken says the change is due to limited staff, and the fact that the Mi-Wok location receives the fewest visitors during the winter season. He adds, “The forest must scrutinize all its expenditures and closing the Mi-Wok front desk was a difficult decision, but a necessary one. We understand that community members may miss the convenience of stopping into the Mi-Wok Ranger District front desk, but the combination of factors made it extremely difficult for the forest to operate in a ‘business as usual’ manner this year.”
Kuiken plans to review the decision over the coming months and decide next year if the Mi-Wok front desk will re-open for the summer recreation season. The closure takes effect next week.
