Updated at 4:36 PM: The road is now reopened and the CHP has provided more details about the crash.
The accident occurred at approximately 7:40 a.m., when Robert Sanchez-Trujillo, 23, of Galt, was driving a 2015 Kenworth big rig northbound on O’Byrnes Ferry Road, just south of the O’Byrnes Ferry Bridge. Sanchez-Trujillo’s vehicle, which was pulling a trailer loaded with sand, crashed into the rear of another big rig—a 2013 Volvo also loaded with sand—driven by Leonardo Lopez-Andrade, 45, of Acampo.
The impact caused diesel fuel to spill from Sanchez-Trujillo’s saddle tank onto the bridge, prompting a hazardous materials (Hazmat) response. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts and were not injured. Authorities do not suspect alcohol or drugs to be factors in the crash.
Updated at 11:13 am: An extensive cleanup effort is still ongoing on O’Byrnes Ferry Road, prompting a lingering full closure of the road near the bridge that separates Tuolumne and Calaveras counties. Two semi trucks were involved in a crash at around 8 am and a large amount of fluid was dumped onto the roadway. Environmental health teams are involved in the assessment and cleanup. There is not an estimated opening time.
