New Cassina Disc Golf Course A Part Of Blue Zones Effort

Sonora, CA — A celebration was recently held for a new five-hole disc golf course that has been installed at Dario Cassina High School in Sonora.

During the final period of last Friday’s school day, all of the students took part in a clinic with members of the Tuolumne County Disc Golf Club.

Robert Mayben, Cassina High Principal, explains, “We had a parent of a student suggest a disc golf course months ago. With the offer and support from the Blue Zones Project and the (disc golf) club, it’s here!”

In addition to the new course, Gemi Battle, Blue Zones Project Organization Lead, stated that Cassina has made a commitment to healthy lifestyles by installing a school garden, putting hydroponic gardens in every classroom, and encouraging more movement and healthy eating. The school is now officially, “Blue Zone Project Approved.”

Ann Segerstrom, Mayor of Sonora, attended the ceremony, and added, “This is a wonderful addition for kids to be outdoors and active…and it’s a great use of this space.”

The Tuolumne County Disc Golf Club was recognized at the event for their volunteer hours in designing and installing the school’s course. Club members are also installing a course at Columbia Elementary School for the Blue Zones Project.

The disc golf courses are part of the “Blue Zones Built Environment Marquee Project,” which encourages natural movement for groups of all ages.
