More Mountain Snow Expected This Week

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the western slope of the northern Sierra Nevada, from 10 Wednesday until 10 PM Friday. Additionally, a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Yosemite National Park, from Thursday afternoon through Friday evening.

Snow is forecast over a three day period.

The impacts are expected to arrive in two waves, with the first wave arriving on Wednesday. There will be a brief lull in precipitation Thursday morning, before resuming midday Thursday into Friday. Initial snow levels will be between 5,500 and 6,000 feet with the first wave, before lowering down to 4,500 to 5,500 feet by Friday morning.

The total snow accumulations above the 5,000 foot elevation, will range between half-a-foot and one foot.

Winds could gust as high as forty-five mph. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become hazardous. Plan on slick and difficult travel conditions. Snow covered roads, chain controls, and travel delays are all possible.

Persons should delay all travel if possible. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility. Leave plenty of room between you and the motorist ahead of you, and allow extra time to reach your destination. Avoid sudden braking or acceleration, and be especially cautious on hills or when making turns. Make sure your car is winterized and in good working order.
