San Andreas, CA — A 43-year-old inmate died while incarcerated at the Calaveras County Jail.

The sheriff’s office reports that the man was found unresponsive in his housing unit on November 10, possibly due to a medical event, and there were no signs of foul play.

The inmate was identified as Benjamin Nava.

The sheriff’s office adds, “Custodial staff quickly initiated life-saving efforts as paramedics responded and assumed life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, the individual was pronounced deceased.”

Investigators from the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office and District Attorney’s Office are conducting a thorough investigation in accordance with departmental protocol. The Sheriff’s Office is also working with governing agencies that oversee correctional facilities.

The sheriff’s office concludes, “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr. Nava during this difficult time. The investigation remains ongoing, and further details will be provided as they become available.”
