Public Again Allowed To Recreate On SPI Lands

Sonora, CA — Citing that wildfire risk is decreasing in the state, Sierra Pacific Industries is reopening its California forestlands to the public.

SPI owns nearly two million acres of timberland across California and Washington, and its public access policy allows for the use of its properties for many recreational activities. However, a temporary change was made in August when wildfires were raging in the state. SPI’s private forestland is again available for hiking, bicycling, fishing, hunting and cross country skiing.

SPI spokesperson Andrea Howell says, “We thank the public for respecting the temporary closures. We are glad conditions have improved so that we can reopen our lands for responsible recreation.”

It is noted that the company prohibits target shooting, trail building, off-road vehicle use, overnight camping or any type of fires on its property. Also, it is outlawed to take any type of forest products, wildflowers, mushrooms, non-game species, water, soil or rock samples.

There still, however, remains some isolated SPI closures near the Carr, Hirz and Delta fire burn scars.
