This year’s Veterans Day/Armistice Day is on Sunday Nov. 11 and it marks 100 years since the official end of World War I. Expect most banks, all post offices, Tuolumne and Calaveras Public schools, all libraries and Tuolumne and Calaveras Superior Courts to be closed Monday in observance of Veteran’s Day.
The Tuolumne County Historical Society plans to commemorate the occasion with an exhibit dedication on Saturday at 2 PM. The event will include a color guard from the Tuolumne County Veterans, speakers and refreshments. View displays covering the Spanish influenza, original World War I posters, a casualty list of local residents who died in the war, souvenirs brought home from the war, a memorial to George Marshall who is buried in France and a description by his mother, Hoveta Marshall, of her journey to France in 1933 as a Gold Star Mother. Also on Saturday there is a Veterans Recognition Service at the Discover Life Seventh Day Adventist Church and a Spaghetti Luncheon for Veterans at the Sonora Moose Lodge.
Railtown 1897 State Historic Park and the California State Railroad Museum Foundation are proud to offer veterans and active military personnel with complimentary excursion train rides plus complimentary Park admission on Sunday. Veteran and active military personnel are encouraged to wear their uniforms, more specifics are here.
This weekend is Second Saturday Art Night in Downtown Sonora. The monthly event features performers and art, this month’s theme is Gold Rush. Check out period costumes and music at several businesses on Washington Street and in the Sonora Opera Hall.
Summerville High and Connections Visual and Performing Arts Academy will present “The Addams Family,” a musical about America’s darkest family. Performances this weekend and next, times and ticket information are here.
In Columbia at the Fallon House performances of Away In A Basement: A Church Basement Ladies Christmas by Sierra Repertory Theater will continue. Evening shows start at 7 PM on Friday and Saturday, on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday catch a performance at 2 PM through December 9.
