Colfax, CA — On a wet and rainy night in Colfax the 2018 football season came to an end for the Sonora Wildcats as they dropped the CIF Sac Joaquin Section Division V Semi-Final game 51-7.
The game would start off with Sonora stopping the Falcons on their first possession. As the Wildcats took over on offense, the Wildcats lost a fumble deep in their own territory. Colfax would take over, but the offense of the Falcons would not be out there long as ball hawk Bryan Wynne would intercept Alex Weir of Colfax and the Wildcat offense would take over again deep in their own territory. Sonora, unable to get a first down would set up to punt. The snap was over the head of punter Connor Pullen and shoot out of the back of the end zone for a safety to start the scoring and Colfax was up 2-0. The Falcons would get the ball back on the free kick and move down the field until Weir found Jake Green who would break a tackle and fly down the sidelines for a 52 yard touchdown pass and with the extra point it was 9-0 Colfax. On the ensuing kickoff the ball would land deep in the Sonora half and would roll on the ground until Sonora’s Justin Morgan would scoop up the ball and go 98 yards for the score. Wynne would add the extra point and the Falcon lead was cut to 9-7. Sonora kicked off to Colfax and Jake Green returned the kickoff for 85 yards and the score, taking it to 16-7 Falcons. Colfax would add another score towards the end of the first quarter on a 17 yard run by Colton Reeves and it was 23-7 Colfax at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter the Falcons would continue their scoring ways, the first coming from 1 yard out by Colton Reeves to extend the Falcon lead 30-7. Reeves would add another score in the second quarter from 11 yards out and the point after would split the uprights and Colfax would take a 37-7 lead into halftime.
The third quarter would be more Colfax as Reeves added another run from 33 yards, taking the score to 44-7, Colfax. Reeves would haul in a Weir pass alter in the quarter and take it 35 yards for the score, making it 51-7 Colfax at the end of the third quarter
The fourth quarter would see Sonora moving the ball, but unable to punch in another score. The Colfax offensive line would create huge running lanes for the Falcons backs all game. Neither team would add any more points and as the horn sounded the Wildcats would have their 2018 season come to a close with Colfax moving on to the Section Championship 51-7.
After a tough start to the season dropping their first four games, the Wildcats went on a 7 game win streak, remaining undefeated in Mother Lode League play and winning league for the fifth straight year with an overall MLL record of 29-0 during that span. It was a good season for Sonora, one in which injuries and a relatively thin bench would make for some players playing both offense and defense and seeing other players switch positions mid-season. For the Seniors, this would be the last time strapping up the green and gold uniform. For the Juniors and Sophomores, this should leave them with a taste of playoff football and only fuel their desire to put the work in during the off season to come back bigger, faster, and stronger.
