Calaveras County, CA — A grant brings money to the Calaveras County Arts Council. A $1500 grant from the Calaveras County Office of Education will help fund the council’s 2013 Arts in School Program. That money, along with other donations and fundraising activities, provides funding to bring in artists for special classes and workshops in the K- 6 schools in Calaveras County.
Council Executive Director Mary Jane Genochio says students learn more than the arts. Genochio says, “It’s the team work. You have group sessions where kids of all ages are working together. May be they’re sharing pictures or paints or discussing a story a storyteller has read to them. It creates a community not just a teacher teaching to students, everybody interacts and interjects with their ideas and imaginations.”
Genochio says the program’s budget is around $14,000 a year and is divided between 12 schools. All the money for the program comes from donations or fundraising.
