Sacramento, CA — California lawmakers are hearing arguments today about a proposed bill would eliminate certain tax breaks for groups like the Boy Scouts.
Long Beach Democrat Ricardo Lara has introduced SB323, which takes aim at the Boy Scouts policy prohibiting gay scouts and troop leaders. It would take away some tax exemptions from groups that prohibit members from joining based on gender identity, race, sexual orientation, nationality or religious affiliation.
The AP reports that opponents have argued that the bill could be far-reaching, and also impact groups like 4-H, Girl Scouts and Pop Warner football leagues. SB323 has its first committee hearing today in Sacramento.
