Fighting Infection And Winning

Sonora, CA – Sonora Regional Medical Center (SRMC) takes top honors in preventing infections. It is one of 16 facilities nationwide to have a score high enough to move on to phase two of The Joint Commission’s Surgical Site Infection (SSI) Change Project. That group instructs other hospitals on effective practices and methods used to prevent and control surgical site infections. SRMC had such a low score its procedures were used in a commission report published in May of 2013.

SRMC Director of Quality Mgmt. Dixie Hukari says, “So what it means is that the patients who are coming here with heart failure, heart attacks and pneumonia are receiving the recommended care the vast majority of the time. In fact we scored not just above 95%, but closer to 99% in which all the measures were met.”

Hukari says those measures included strict guidelines to help prevent the transmission of diseases.
