Sonora, CA – The annual Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration is coming up Sunday in the Sonora High School Auditorium.
According to the event’s committee member Pat Cervelli, this is the 17th year that this free public event will be held. This years topic is is “Economic Justice/Injustice.” The topic relates to the Martin Luther King Jr. quote “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
The Keynote speaker is Presiding Minister of San Francisco’s Church for The Fellowship of All Peoples, Rev. Dorsey Blake. Performers this year will include the Pine Cone singers and the Sierra Waldorf Children’s Choir. Del Berg, a 96 year old from Columbia, will be honored for his seven decades of activisim in the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr.
Last year’s event drew about 400 people. Sunday’s free celebration will begin at 2pm at the Sonora High School Auditorium. The non-profit committee putting on the event also organizes an essay and art contest for Tuolumne County school students. The winning essay will be read at the celebration and entries can be viewed in the Sonora High School Library at the reception following the event.
