Republican Congressman Jeff Denham is trying to ensure that a new highway bill will not include federal funding for the state’s high speed rail project.
The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee endorsed a $260 billion transportation bill Friday, and Denham included an amendment preventing funding from going to the $98 billion rail project.
“Highway bill money should be used on highways,” says Denham. “This Administration and the California legislature want high-speed rail at any cost, they will spend lavishly without a disciplined plan, and say anything to get it done.”
The legislation is entitled the “American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act.” Denham’s amendment was adopted with a 31-22 vote from the House panel.
Denham’s District 19 covers Tuolumne County.
