Special Meeting To Focus On Tuolumne County Community Resilience Centers

Sonora, CA — The Tuolumne County Supervisors will decide how, or if, to move forward on the construction of one or two community resilience centers.

We reported previously that through a federal National Disaster Resilience competition, Tuolumne County was picked to receive $19-million to build a single community center. Requirements are that it must be located in the county close to the Rim Fire footprint, have access to high speed internet, be near population centers and clear of any environmental concerns. Instead of constructing just one center, the county has been looking to split the grant revenue and build at two sites, one in Tuolumne, and another in Groveland. To make it work, the county hoped to have the Groveland project construction costs to range between $7.6-9.1 million and the Tuolumne project between $6-7.5-million. The Groveland site is currently estimated to cost $9.9-million and Tuolumne is just over $8-million. The county would need to work with its consulting firm Lionakis to find ways to further cut costs.

Paying partners at both centers would include ATCCA (food distribution, classes, counseling, etc.), Columbia College (online course work with the possibility of culinary classes), Health and Human Services (classes and meetings), Sheriff’s Community Services Unit (community outreach).

In addition, the Tuolumne Center would offer a program from the Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools Office related to continuing education. The Groveland site would also house space for Southside Seniors for senior meals and outreach.

The supervisors will discuss the projects, and decide how to move forward, at a meeting scheduled for 1:30pm, this coming Monday, May 6, in the board of supervisors meeting room.
