Groveland, CA — Wards Ferry Road in the Tuolumne River canyon will be closed to through traffic Saturday, May 12th, from 8 am to 11 am for the 15th Mariposa Women’s Stage Race.
Formerly called the Kern County Women’s Stage Race, event organizers expect about 100 Women Racers will gather in Groveland and leave in a group at 9 am to ride to the bottom of the Tuolumne River Canyon at Wards Ferry Bridge.
Six separate groups of racers will start up the hill beginning at 9:30 a.m., finishing on top of Deer Flat Road just west of Groveland. Highway Patrol and course marshals will monitor the road closure.
This bicycle racing series has four stages over three days starting May 11th and covers between 104 and 126 miles depending on the race category. Other events in the stage race are the Basso Bridge Time Trial near LaGrange Friday at noon, the Greeley Hill Road Race Saturday at 2 pm, and the Bootjack Road Race Sunday from 8 to noon. These three events are not expected to significantly impact traffic.
According to event organizers a letter was distributed to Groveland area residents that had both Saturday and Sunday as the day of the event.
The race is organized by Velo Promo which conducts 38 separate racing events in California and organized the U.S. National Cyclocross Championships in 1993 in Tuolumne. For more information, visit www.velopromo.com.
