Sonora, CA — Tuolumne County law enforcement officials will be honoring one of its fallen heroes.
The 2012 Peace officers Memorial ceremony will be held May 23rd at the main courthouse building at noon. Assemblywomen Kristin Olsen is the main speakers at the event.
The ceremony will honor Police officer John Sheldon who was ambushed by two men while on his beat in downtown Sonora in 1855. Despite being mortally wounded, Sheldon was able to get to the United States Hotel and tell the inn keeper what happened. It is believed the criminals attacked Sheldon in retaliation for him shooting one of their friends in 1851.
Earlier this month, Sheldon’s name was added to the Peace Officer Memorial in Sacramento and Washington D.C.
