Federal Funds Fix Water Woes In Calaveras County

San Andreas, CA — Water repairs mean millions for Calaveras County, but it’s the state and federal government footing the bill.

The Calaveras County Water District is getting over 2-million in funds to pay for installing water mains, hydrants and pump stations. District officials say this will improve reliability.

It will also use some of the money to replace two old redwood water storage tanks near Ebbetts Pass with new ignition resistant steel tanks. These tanks combine can store around 310 thousand gallons of water. It will keep the taps flowing for Dorrington, Big Trees and Snowshoe Springs. Cal Fire lists these communities under its high fire hazard zones. It says these residents are at extreme risk due to possible loss of water supply during a fire.

Most of the funds are coming from the U.S. department of Agriculture. The CCWD is required to pitch in $149 thousand dollars of its own for the repairs.
