Angels Camp Loses A Business Pioneer

Angels Camp, CA — The man who brought the first shopping center to Calaveras County has died.

92 year old, Henry “Hank” Middleton, died last Wednesday.

In 1955 he opened Middleton’s Furniture and Appliances in Angels Camp. Then built and opened the Mark Twain shopping center in 1960. There he sold the first televisions in Calaveras County.

His son, Bob Middleton, manages the store now. He says his father was a hard worker, had a contagious enthusiasm, and loved life.

He says Henry was very civic minded and felt a real commitment to the community. Henry served on the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors from 1972 to 1974. He was past-president of the Angels Camp Veterans Memorial Board, and helped get the vets building constructed.

His funeral is Wednesday at 11 am at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Angels Camp.
