Californians Divided On Tax Propositions

Sonora, CA — A recent informal myMotherLode poll differs from a recent Field poll about Governor Jerry Brown’s Proposition 30.

Governor Brown’s proposal will increase taxes on earners making over $250K and increase the state sales tax. The myMotherLode poll asked, “Do you support Gov. Brown’s tax increase and state sales tax increase?” 76 percent said No, 23 percent said Yes.

The Field Poll conducted earilier this week found 54 percent of likely California voters are in favor of the November tax measure and 38 percent are in opposition. The poll noted that one-fifth of the voters that approve the taxes say that they would be less inclined to vote yes if the legislature proceeds with the high speed rail project.

The poll also found that voters are split on Proposition 38 pushed by Molly Munger. That measure would increase income taxes on most all Californians, not just the highest earners. 46 percent are in favor and 46 percent are in opposition. A judge this week rejected a lawsuit filed by attorneys for the group Our Children, Our Future argued that their initiative should have qualified first because it turned in signatures earlier than Brown’s campaign. The ruling has already been appealed by the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association.
