California Governor Jerry Brown will sign recently passed legislation to green light the high speed rail project.
The legislature narrowly voted earlier this month to issue the initial $2.6 billion in bonds to start the first leg of construction, and a similar amount will be chipped in by the federal government. Brown will sign SB 1029 at the Union Station in Los Angeles at 10 o’clock this morning, and then also host a press conference this afternoon in San Francisco.
Leading Republicans had argued against moving forward with high speed rail because the revised costs are notably higher than what was sold to voters when the ballot measure was approved in 2008.
