State Exports Jump

Sacramento, CA – California sees an increase in exports from a year ago. The state exported $15.18 billion in June, up nearly 10 percent from $13.83 billion in June 2011, according to Thursday’s U.S. Commerce Department trade figures. Those figures show without adjusting for inflation, California has made export gains for 32 consecutive months.

The figures noted that while state shipments to countries like Asia and Europe have dipped, out neighbors to the south are raising the numbers. The Commerce Department statistics show California’s merchandise export trade is being boosted by manufacturing and Mexico. Exports to Mexico are up nearly 25 percent year after year.

California’s exports of manufactured goods in June totaled $9.71 billion, a hike of 10.6 percent from $8.78 billion in June 2011. However, Non-manufactured exports of mostly raw materials and agricultural goods went down by nearly 4 percent to $1.58 billion, down from $1.65 billion. June re-exports totaled $3.89 billion, up 14 percent from $3.41 billion.

Exports of U.S. goods and services rose 0.9 percent from May to a record high of $185 billion in June. The Commerce Department credits strong overseas sales of autos, pharmaceuticals and industrial machinery for the increase.
