Have A Safe New Year’s Eve

Sonora, CA– With New Year’s Eve here, the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents to never ring in the new year with firearms.

“Shooting guns off at midnight is never a good idea, especially if you’ve been drinking,” says Sgt. Jeff Wilson. “We have trouble with this every year. Those bullets do come down and do gather enough speed that can cause fatal injuries.”

Wilson says it’s also important to remember that fireworks are illegal in Tuolumne County and should never be used.

CHP will continue its Maximum Enforcement Period and Sgt. Wilson says the Sheriff’s department will also have extra units out. Officer Nick Norton of the Sonora Area CHP noted a few days ago, “We have started to see a trend over the past few years where people have actually started to designate a driver. However, we still have the few that think having a few drinks is ok, end up driving themselves home, and get into trouble.”

Information on cabs or special public transportation assistance on New Year’s was not available but suggestions can be posted in the comment section.
