Sonora, CA – This week officials are out counting the number of homeless residents in Tuolumne County.
It is part of a bi-yearly survey conducted for the federal census. ATCAA Housing Resources Director Beetle Barbour says 186 homeless residents were counted in 2009. There 132 adults and 54 children. Barbour says those doing the count do not take names or a social security numbers, and are just looking for aggregate numbers. Traditionally, Tuolumne County’s largest age block for homeless residents is 35-50, and there is typically a close balance between the number of males and females.
The survey numbers are taken into account when federal grant funding is available for projects designed to reduce the homeless population.
