Of the various alternative High Schools in Tuolumne County, Cal-SAFE is perhaps one of the least known.
Cal-SAFE High School teacher, Joane Job, was Thursday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.
The current campus is at the old Columbia Elementary school. There are eight students enrolled this year. On the average, there are around nine students enrolled each year. The ages can potentially range from seventh through twelfth grades.
The California School Age Families Education (Cal-SAFE) Program, became operational in July 2000.
The Cal-SAFE Program builds upon education reform initiatives, assures a quality education program with high standards for enrolled students, and mandates accountability of local educational agencies (LEAs) for performance of students and their children in meeting program goals.
The Tuolumne County Program serves pregnant and parenting students, including parenting young men, who have not completed high school. The local students receive an appropriate academic program, as well as preparation for childbirth and parenting, career information and/or career technical education, agency referrals for health and social services, and a supportive atmosphere and networking system to meet the students’ individual needs.
The graduation rate for Tuolumne’s Cal-SAFE, over the past several years, has been exceptionally high.
More information regarding Cal-SAFE, can be obtained by calling (209) 533-8521.
The “Newsmaker of the Day” is heard each weekday morning on AM 1450 KVML at 6:47, 7:47 and 8:47am.
