Calaveras County Jail Construction

San Andreas, CA — A contract for the construction of access roads and some utility work for the Calaveras County Jail project was awarded to a local contractor.

The company K.W. Emerson of San Andreas had the most competitive bid, $849,000, and it was approved by the Board of Supervisors unanimously.

“What I like the most is that it is a local contractor,” says Sheriff Gary Kuntz. “I really want to distribute as much work to Calaveras County sub-contractors as possible.”

The contract for the actual jail construction will be awarded at a later time. Kuntz says he would be surprised if a local firm can compete with an outside general contractor for the top contract, but says he hopes that the general contractor can find a way to use as many local sub-contractors as they can. The $56 million jail project is expected to be completed in Spring of 2013.
