Valley Springs, CA — A 24-year-old man sleeping in the roadway was killed after being hit by a pickup truck along Milton Road.
The CHP reports that 24-year-old Craig Deherrara of Valley Springs was in a sleeping bag in the eastbound lane. He was hit by a truck driven by 60-year-old James Waller of Lodi at around 5am on Saturday. Waller was reportedly traveling at around 35 mph and was unable to apply the brakes in time when he saw an object in the roadway. After hitting the object he turned around to find out what he hit. When he learned it was Deherrera, he called 911 and remained on scene until the Jenny Lind Fire Department and CHP arrived.
An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information should contact the CHP at 209-754-3541.
