Sonora, CA — An opening ceremony for the Vietnam Memorial Traveling Wall was held at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds Friday afternoon.
The traveling tribute is at the Fairgrounds through the weekend as part of Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day. Speakers at the one o’clock ceremony included California Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Rocky Chavez, Congressman Jeff Denham, Assemblywoman Kristin Olsen, Calaveras County Supervisor Merita Callaway, Tuolumne County Supervisor John Gray, Sonora Mayor Bill Canning and Medal of Honor recipient John Cavaiani.
The wall includes the names of the men and women who died fighting in the Vietnam War.
Those who died from Tuolumne County include First Lt. Joseph G. Galambos, Staff Sgt. Roy Lockhart, Second Lt. Clinton R. Anderson, Lance Corporal Dennis C. Johnson, Lance Corporal Thomas A. Benton, Specialist 5 William W. McConnell, Private First Class Steve E. Amescau, Specialist 4 Mark P. Collins, Chief Warrant Officer Robert M. Paulk, Private First Class Tobias E. Markuson and Airman First Class David M. Davison.
The wall can be viewed free of charge through the weekend. It is open 24-7.
