Forest Improvements Completed

Sonora, CA — Three popular day-use destinations in the Stanislaus National Forest are re-opening today after being closed down for nearly a year.

Forest Service Spokesperson Jerry Snyder says upgrades were made at the Donnell Vista Overlook, Columns of the Giants Interpretive Trail and Douglas Day Use Area thanks to funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Over $2.2 million was spent to make trails in the forest ADA compliant, $295,000 to repair rugged wilderness trails and $915,000 to finish long standing maintenance at several recreational facilities.

Notably, a new ADA accessible trail was constructed from the parking lot to the observation platform at Donnell Vista, allowing access for residents in wheelchairs. The site provides views of the Dardenelles, Donnell Reservoir and Middle Fork of the Stanislaus River.
