Tuolumne County Trivia Bee was a fun event for a good cause, raising an estimated $3,000 for the Tuolumne County Library’s adult literacy programs. Maryann Curmi entertained the crowd of 85 people at the Sonora Opera Hall. The turn out was slightly less than expected with very few under the age of 30.
The event was, according to Louise Steuben, “about creating ripples of excitement about learning” Certainly it was a night of learning and excitement for all who attended.
Seven teams of three answered wide-ranging questions from local history to sports and movies. The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 391’s team had a strong first round but the Groveland Bookies earned the highest score with 28 points by the end of the second round. They competed against Sweet Revenge with 24 points, and Clockwork Orange with 23 points in the final round.
Groveland Bookies and Sweet Revenge (both sponsored by the Friends of the Tuolumne County Library) were able to answer the final question correcly but Sweet Revenge didn’t wager enough points and Groveland Bookies (Malcolm Milliron, Larry Santa Maria, and Patti Beaulieu) took first place. Clockwork Orange, sponsored by the Union Democrat won for “Costumes Extraordinaire”.
