Los Angeles, CA — After being denied by the State Supreme Court, a group concerned about the redistricting process has now filed a federal lawsuit.
The group is led by former Republican Congressman George Radanovich. The Associated Press reports that the lawsuit argues that the newly drawn state Congressional maps fail to protect the voting rights of African Americans and Latinos in three Los Angeles County districts.
Voters approved the creation of an independent redistricting commission, which drew up the new boundaries. Republicans are expected to lose seats in both the U.S. Congress and State Senate. The State Supreme Court previously declined to take up the group’s challenge.
Radanovich, from Mariposa, previously represented District 19 which covers Tuolumne County.
