Washington, D.C– It’s been a busy couple of days for Summerville High School’s Jazz@8 choir.
Of course Tuesday night, the students were honored to perform at the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree lighting ceremony.
Summerville Principal Dave Urquhart who traveled with the 18-member choir, says they arrived at the White House early Tuesday morning.
“The group started singing at 7:30 am and sang as tourists came through on the White House tour for two hours,” said Urquhart. “It was very exciting to be in the White House. We didn’t see the president, but we did see his dog.”
Urqhart says that after the Christmas Tree Lighting performance, the group had the chance to watch other local talents from the Mother Lode. The Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians performed their native dances in the Library of Congress.
“The dancers did a remarkable job and represented our community very well,” said Urqhart.
The choir’s visit to Washington, D.C continued on Wednesday with a tour of the Capitol. Urqhart says they also visited three different Smithsonian Institute Museums and had a city tour later that evening. The group plans to return to California today.
Jazz@8 had to raise around $20,000 to make the trip. They were invited to perform by Congressman Jeff Denham.
