Supervisors Interested In Merced River Plan

Sonora, CA — The Tuolumne County Supervisors have voted to send a letter to the National Park Service regarding the Merced Wild and Scenic River Planning Workbook.

For several years the NPS has been developing a plan to manage the Merced Wild and Scenic River, and it is expected to impact transportation to and from Yosemite. One of the goals of the NPS is to reduce the vehicle traffic in Yosemite, while at the same time still allow access to the many that want to visit.

It could result in more people being bused into the park. Rather than implement flat requirements, the county is asking that Yosemite use an incentives based system to promote the use of tour buses. The County also asks that the park consider the idea of a shared visitor’s center with organizations in the Groveland area.

Comment letters are due today.
