C.H.P. Anticipates Busy Weekend

The C.H.P.’s “Maximum Enforcement” weekend will take place from Friday evening, December 30th through Sunday evening, January 1st.

C.H.P. Officer and spokesperson Mike Remmel, was Thursday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.

Last weekend in Tuolumne County, three people were arrested for driving under the influence. There were two injury accidents, both on J-59, and no fatalities. This year the CHP issued 20 citations, far below last year’s 60 citations.

Remmel anticipates much more activity this weekend as New Year’s Eve and New Years Day tends to bring out more traffic during the late night and early morning hours.

“It’s a dangerous time to be out. Be aware of every vehicle coming towards you, as you don’t know who may have been drinking” stressed Remmel.

With Sonora Pass open (as of this article), the CHP has an extra thirty miles to patrol this weekend.

With the new year, comes a major change in the law for child restraint seats.

Currently, children must be secured in an appropriate child passenger restraint in the back seat of a vehicle until they are at least six years old or weigh at least 60 pounds.

With the new law beginning on January 1, 2012:

Children must be secured in an appropriate child passenger restraint in the back seat of a vehicle until they are at least eight years old or 4′ 9″ in height.

The “Newsmaker of the Day” is heard each weekday morning on AM 1450 KVML at 6:47, 7:47 and 8:47am.
