Yosemite, CA – Last year Yosemite National Park had its highest visitor count since 1996.
Park Ranger Kari Cobb says, “Instead of going to a different state or across the country, I think people were looking to stay close to home and have an affordable vacation.”
Yosemite registered 3.9 million visitors in 2009, which is up from 3.5 million in 2008. Visitation to the park peaked in 1996 with 4.1 million, but that number had been declining ever since.
Cobb also credits the recent Ken Burns PBS documentary, “The National Parks; America’s Best Idea” for helping to spur new interest in locations such as Yosemite.
