Sonora, CA – Smith Station Road in Tuolumne County has been designated as the "John Muir Highway."
It is part of a regional effort to designate portions of Hwy 120 and 132, along with connecting county roads in Tuolumne and Mariposa County, as the "John Muir Highway."
It is the route that conservationist John Muir wrote about during his first trip to Yosemite Valley in the 1860’s.
The Supervisors voted 5-0 to rename the portion of Smith Station Road. The proposal had support from both the Tuolumne County Visitors Bureau and the Yosemite Chamber of Commerce.
The Mariposa County Supervisors had already designated its portion of Smith Station Road as the "John Muir Highway."
