Sonora, CA — Seeking his third term as Tuolumne County’s Second District Supervisor Paolo Maffei finds himself challenged by a relative newcomer to the political arena, Randy Hanvelt.
The two were on hand for the Thursday evening "Meet the Candidates Night" sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce at the County Administration Building.
Maffei stated that much work needs to be done on behalf of developers, "Our area where we have not made progress is dealing with the developer. We put them through the mill and we allow four lot splits every second Tuesday without even much comment and it passes on a three to two vote. Cookie cuttering up the county in a way that will destroy our agricultural component.
We’re starting to build consensus on the Board I believe with the idea of conceptual review of development projects whereby we can’t violate C.E.Q.A. but we can have a review of a project before a developer spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on the Environmental Impact Report, cultural resources, etc. Then comes an up and down decision of the Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors. We can do conceptual review but we can’t vote on it."
From the challenger Randy Hanvelt, "I’m an action oriented guy. I want it to happen yesterday, not today. I want to fix things. I want to get my hands in it … that’s what I do. It’s what I’ve done all my life. I want to hear what you (constituents) have to say. I want your ideas and solutions because I don’t have them all. I’m a reasonably intelligent guy but I only know what I know. I want to make a difference in this community."
