Support For Capital Punishment

Sacramento, CA — A new poll finds that 70 percent of California voters support the death penalty.

The Field Poll finds that support is still lower than in the mid-1980s, when the death penalty was favored by as many as 83 percent of voters.  The poll shows that 82 percent of Republicans and 62 percent of Democrats support capital punishment.

There have been no executions in California since 2006 because of legal challenges to the lethal-injection process. Currently 705 prisoners are on death row at San Quentin State Prison.
