Governor Debates Scheduled For Fall

Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman says she has accepted three fall debates against Democrat Jerry Brown, all of them in Northern California.

The Associated Press reports that Whitman’s campaign announced on Tuesday that the first debate will be Sept. 28 at the University of California, Davis. The Sacramento Bee, KCRA-TV and Capitol Public Radio are co-sponsors.

Brown previously challenged Whitman to 10 debates and forums around the state, including one this Saturday at which he is scheduled to appear.

Whitman also agreed to two debates in October – one sponsored by The Fresno Bee and Univision and one sponsored on Oct. 11th by NBC and Dominican University in San Rafael.

Brown previously agreed to the Dominican University event. His campaign said Tuesday that he would consider the Oct. 2 Fresno debate.

According to the Fresno Bee, Whitman spokeswoman Sarah Pompeii said that Whitman will attend only these three debates and no others.

This leaves no debates scheduled in the large southern California media markets.
