San Quentin, CA– San Quentin death row inmate George Smithey is dead after authorities say he committed suicide by hanging himself with bed sheets in his cell.
Prison officials say the convicted Calaveras County murderer was found dead early Saturday. 70-year old Smithey had been on death row since 1989 for the murder and attempted rape of Glencoe resident Cheryl Anne Nesler during an armed robbery at her home. A Calaveras County Superior Court judge last week reversed Smithey’s death sentence and resentenced him to life in prison without parole.
