Sonora, CA — Tuolumne County has approved a contract with Aramark Correctional Services to provide food and commissary services for the jail.
“Back in 2008 it was apparent that funding from the State and County was going to be tight,” Sheriff Jim Mele told the Board of Supervisors at Tuesday´s meeting. “We looked at different alternatives and one of which was to go to a private vendor for food services.”
The contract with Aramark will cost the County approximately $375,000 per year, and is expected to save around $175,000. As a result of the decision, the Sheriff´s Office is forced to layoff three jail cooks. It was noted that Aramark has extended job offers to two of the three workers.
