Sonora, CA — There is a joint effort underway to secure state funding to make improvements along Greenley Rd. near Sonora Elementary School.
Caltrans has $48.5 million that will be available this year as part of the California Safe Routes to School program. It is designed to improve safety in areas around local schools.
The Tuolumne County Public Works Department, City of Sonora, Sonora Elementary and other agencies are working to put together a grant application.
Public Works Director Peter Rei told the Board of Supervisors, “We are looking at having a new entrance to the school, a traffic signal, adding sidewalk all along the west side of the road and widening it by one lane so that people can get in and out safer.”
Officials are still in the process of estimating what the project would cost. The deadline to submit applications to Caltrans is April 15th.
