Sonora, CA — An Oakland man was killed Friday night after falling from a trail into the Tuolumne River.
60-year-old William Patrick Braun was hiking with friends near the Berkeley Family Camp and tripped and fell 60 ft. down an embankment and into the river.
Friends initially could not locate him, so they called the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office. The Search and Rescue Team found Braun at 8:19pm about 150 ft. downstream from where he entered the water.
SAR Coordinator Deputy Dan Crow says that Braun suffered head trauma and that an autopsy will be conducted Monday to determine the cause of death. He adds that campers and employees of the Berkeley Family Camp were instrumental in helping to locate Braun.
No foul play is suspected.
The 14.5 acre Berkeley Family Camp is located on the South Fork of the Tuolumne River off Harden Flat Rd.
