Knight Fire Expands To 650 Acres

Sonora, CA — The Knight Fire has now expanded to approximately 650 acres moving both up and down The Stanislaus River Canyon.

According to Stanilaus National Forest Spokesman Pat Kaunert the fire has now reached the river. Firefighters have spent a great deal of time of fighting a dozen spot fires.

Kaunert adds that this is the most difficult time of the day as the inversion punches off which causes a vent giving the fire a chance to grown in size and intensity.

At the present time the only structures threatened are located in the Mt. Knight subdivision.

This is considered a "campaign" fire meaning that it will last through several burn cycles or through the end of the week and the weekend and possibly into next week.

Afternoon resources include 24 20 man hand crews, eight dozers, 27 engines, 10 water tenders, two heli-tankers and four helicopters with water dropping buckets.

The Stanislaus National Forest is asking motorists to avoid using Southfork Rd. in the Twain Harte area as much as possible as this is being used to move fire equipment to 4N01 and on to the Mt. Knight area.
