Great Sierra River Cleanup Deemed A Success

Sonora, CA – An estimated 64 tons of trash and recyclables were collected Saturday morning during the 1st annual “Great Sierra River Cleanup.”

Brittany Juergenson with the Sierra Nevada Conservancy says approximately 3000 volunteers spread out across 22 counties and 140 river miles of the Sierra Nevada to clean more than 40 river and creek sites. Volunteers wore disposable gloves and were armed with trash sacks.

Juergonson says unique items discovered included gold jewelry, two sunken motorboats, undergarments, a large water heater, shopping carts and even a bowling ball.

The Mother Lode effort concentrated on the North Fork-Tuolumne River, Sonora Creek, Woods Creek, Turnback Creek and Sullivan Creek.

The Great Sierra River Cleanup was held in conjunction with the 25th annual Coastal Cleanup Day.
