Sonora, CA — The statewide C.H.P. Christmas Maximum Enforcement Period will start this evening at six o’clock.
The 78 hour M.E.P. will come to an end Sunday midnight.
Last year 37 people were killed statewide in traffic related accidents over the Christmas weekend. According to Officer Mike Remmel 23 of those deaths were alcohol related.
In Tuolumne County there were 18 accidents last year, one driving-under-the-influence arrest and no fatalities.
Overall for the state a year ago there were over 4,000 accidents.
The C.H.P. reminds all motorists to “buckle up,” make sure child safety restraint seats are properly installed, obey the speed limit and drive defensively.
