“Born To Read” Garners $15,600 Grant

Sonora, CA — Thanks to the Sonora Area Foundation, the Tuolumne County Library has received a $15,600 grant for its “Born To Read” program.

Librarian Connie Corcoran says “Born To Read” was initiated seven years ago to encourage families to begin reading to their children from birth. Developmental reading programs are designed for babies, toddlers and preschoolers. Parents are given tips for sharing books as an enjoyable family activity. Staff model age-appropriate reading techniques and provide periodic workshops for parents.

The library purchases approximately 100 books a month to build home libraries for children. The minimum cost of those books is $300 per month. The grant will allow the program to continue for almost five years.
