Sonora, CA — The countdown continues for a major change in the California state driving code dealing with the use of cell phones.
CHP Officer Tom Wills reminds motorists that effective 12am, July 1 all licensed drivers must have a hands-free device for their cell phones. If you do not wish to use a hands-free device you can still use a cell phone in a vehicle but you must pull off to the side of the road and park safely.
Also effective the first of July drivers under the age of 17 cannot use a cell phone in a vehicle even if they have a hands-free device.
Wills adds that CHP officers will be on the lookout for violaters. He states that it will be difficult for a driver to hide the fact that he or she may be using a cell phone.
Passengers in any vehicle may use cell phones without a hands-free device.
