San Andreas, Ca — Escaped debris burns are a growing problem this time of year in the Mother Lode.
CAL Fire Prevention Specialist Nancy Longmore says that although we are not in fire season, residents need to practice safe burning techniques.
She says you should never leave a fire unattended. Beware of burning on sloped ground as material may roll downhill and escape control. Do not burn on windy days, as the gusts can carry fire embers quite a distance from the original burn. Piles should not be larger than 4×4 ft. Be considerate of neighbors and aware of where the smoke is drifting.
Longmore notes that CAL Fire may charge landowners for the cost of suppressing debris burns that escape control. Burn permits will be required starting on May 1, 2008.
