Sonora, CA — The first Mother Lode Stand Down is coming to the Mother Lode Fairgrounds this weekend.
The Stand Down is a two-and-a-half day event for honorably discharged homeless veterans. Coordinator Frank Smart, founder of Viet Nam Veterans Post #391 in Sonora, has heard that vets will be coming from Tuolumne, Calaveras, Amador, Mariposa and Stanislaus counties. Vets are also expected from Sacramento and Oakland.
While Smart still needs immediate help in erecting tents on the grass field near the Manzanita Building he is overwhelmed with the response of the community. Viet Nam Veterans Post #391, the Elks Lodge, the Sonora Area Foundation and Black Oak Casino have all contributed in one way or another. Two Rotary clubs will be taking care of the breakfasts. Gus´ Steak House has supplied the Stand Down with chicken for one of the dinners while streaks have been provided by still another group. Smart adds that a number of community members have already volunteered their time, talents and resources for the event.
Smart adds that he is hopeful some organization in the community will donate mens´ pants. Otherwise he says his group should have plenty of clothing for the vets.
Anyone wishing to help with the Stand Down can contact Frank Smart at (209) 559-1908. The Stand Down opens Friday morning and closes Sunday noon.
